Hops
Hops are the spice which gives the beer its bitterness, and a large part of its fresh aroma and flavour. As with malt, it is essential to use hops of good quality when brewing.
Fresh hops are green and have a sharp, fresh aroma. Old hops are brown and have little or an unpleasant odor. Hops exposed to air, light and heat will deteriorate rapidly.
Our hops are packed under vacuum or in inert gas, in aluminum laminate foil bags. This protects the hops from oxygen and light and seals the aroma. They are stored in our cold room until we ship it to you. This allows the aroma to be preserved without significant loss for several years. To store an opened hop package, press the air out and tape it shut. Keep it in the freezer for up to 1 year.
We offer whole hops and pellet hops. Whole hops are the most original form of hops. The pellets are hops pulverized and pressed. All of our pellets are of type 90, that is with natural alpha acid content.
Fresh hops are green and have a strong, fresh aroma. Old hops are brown and have little or no aroma. Hops exposed to oxygen, light and heat deteriorate quickly.
Our hops are directly imported and packaged in a protective atmosphere (CO2 / N2) or under vacuum in oxygen-, light- and aroma-tight aluminum laminate foil, and are stored in our cold room until we send them to you. This means that the hops last for several years without their taste and bitterness being significantly affected. Over time, the aroma weakens in particular, but also the taste and bitterness decrease the longer time passes after harvest. For hoppy IPAs etc. where large late additions / dry hopping are used to maximize the aroma, we recommend using fresh hops. Older hops work excellently as bittering and flavoring hops as long as they are refrigerated. NOTE that the storage stability of hops is strongly dependent on the variety as well.
Once you've opened a bag of hops and want to preserve the remaining content, squeze out as much air as you can, tape the bag shut and stored in in the freezer. It should then be used within a year, preferably as soon as possible.
From us you can buy hops in both the form of cones and pellets. Hop cones are the most original form of hops. Hop pellets are hops that have been powdered and pressed. Most of our pellets are of type 90, i.e. with a natural alpha acid content, but we also have a few varieties in so-called Cryo-hop form, i.e. concentrated hops in the form of a lightly compressed powder with much of the plant matter removed.
We state typical alpha acid values for the hop varieties. However, it happens that the actual value deviates significantly from the normal value if the weather during the current harvest year has been extremely cold or hot.
Charles Faram and Yakima Chief Hops have appointed us as them official distributor of their hops. We buy most of our hops through them but also directly from a number of smaller growers.
