From having previously been grown to a very small extent, Viognier has become much more widespread and is now grown elsewhere in southern France, as well as in California, Argentina and Chile.
Viognier produces wines with an aromatic and lightly perfumed character, with notes of peach, apricot and violet. The acidity is relatively low and the wines should usually be drunk rather young.
