Grenache, or Garnacha as it is called in Spain, is one of the most widely grown wine grapes in the world. In France it is mostly grown around the Rhône Valley, and in Chateauneuf-du-Pape typically over 80 % of the grapes grown are Grenache. It ripens late and needs rather warm circumstances. It is generally spicy with peppery notes and hints of rapberries and strawberries.
Mourvèdre, also known as Monastrell or Mataro in other parts of the world, is most associated with southern France. Mourvèdre is often combined with Grenache and Syrah / Shiraz into wines that go under the popular abbreviation GSM. It ripens late and needs quite warm growing conditions, as in Spain where the grape was first grown - these characteristics also apply to Grenache. Mourvèdre produces wines with good structure, intense fruit and often hints of blackberries. In addition to France, the grape is grown in Spain, Australia and California, among other places.
Shiraz is the name used in e.g. Australia, South Africa and Chile for the grape Syrah from the northern Rhône valley, where it produces the great classic wines from Côte-Rotie and Hermitage. This is one of the great red wine grapes, and the best wines can develop during decades of ageing.
